“So many souls. Some lost, some finding themselves, others unaware of their own existence.

This is a machine that both consumes and creates, utilizing the same raw matter of human capital. After a time, we are all to some degree both product and prey. Some fall prey to a greater degree, being selected a victim to be trampled underfoot.  Others still, draw a golden ticket, plucked from the masses of their peers, and elevated to heights unfathomable in any other location.

Full of terrible beauty, the skyscrapers earn their name, grating against the blue up above as if finger nails reaching for the last crumbs. And below, there is a mass, providing foundations from which the buildings rise.

It is in that mass that the identity is found. The old, the young, the rich, the poor and literally everything in between. Here, bodegas sell cans of King Cobra around the corner from Imams facing east. Here, eyes that have seen world wars wait for trains underground, moving from home to store to home, alone. Here, many idealize themselves as Columbus, traveling 30 minutes to discover new worlds. Here, sweet summer nights are both unbearable and cherished. Cursed for the enveloping heat, wept for when they are exchanged for the icy darkness.

All those here seek to find their wings, stretching out to expand their personal horizons. New York is the flame to fly to, the determination of whether you're a moth or a Phoenix. These are the New Yorkers.”
